Aside from purely using it to backdoor into MBA jobs, are GS-9/11 gigs seriously the best opportunity?

Is Woodrow Wilson any different?

You don't go to Wilson/Kennedy to start at the bottom rung of gov't.

you go there to make a shit ton of connections, possibly go to work at a PAC or K street, a high quality think tank for a few years and then move in and out of gov't as a political appointee.

Except in the publicly available data (and in my own experience) federal government agency gigs, ones that are going to start at 9/11, are the most common jobs. In many related documents their career offices describe them as the most popular, along with consulting gigs.

Also GS-11 jobs are not bottom rung of government, wtf. Even a GS-7 gig, assuming it's with a non-obscure fed agency, is better than most state gigs if we're talking about public sector prestige.

sounds like that's the ideal outcome but the more typical result just seems to be working at a regular masters degree level job in the gov't.

People work at PACs out of undergrad. K Street lobbying is flame; you're either lucky as F and worked for the right elected, a DC ex-biglawyer in the right practice group, or the 1/1000 "government relations manager" who stumbled into that job without the aforementioned resume lines and worked your way up. Kennedy MPPs either already do one of the above or after getting the MPP take a different path.

Most of those kids used to gun for PMF, but that program has been eviscerated from what I understand. Policy roles at major non-profits was considered a top jerb, also shit like Foreign Service or Peace Corps.

What it says in writing and what actually happens are 2 different things.

Also, not all PMF placements are the same, but if you wanted to work in the civil service at OSD or State, being a PMF gave you a huge leg up on traditional civil service applicants.

whats the best case scenario for those jobs? top at as some mid level department head and serve all the political appointees that get cycled through your career?

Absolute best case is an SES appointment, usually at the Deputy Ass Secy level or as an Office Director.

Foreign Area Officers (State Dept civil servants) can progress pretty quickly because State is a very top-heavy organization, there are not very many positions below GS-13, same thing with OSD.

the best outcome i ve seen are the ones that go back to their third world country and become ministers, media pundits, etc on the name of HKS alone (these are mid 20 year olds, not the mid career ones)
